Getting into Burnaby is easy as the city is well linked with neighboring cities and municipalities such as Vancouver, Westmister, and Surrey. Travelers can reach the city by car or by public transit.

By car: Many parts of Burnaby can be reached by car in about 25 minutes.From Vancouver, take the Trans-Highway 1 or Highway 7 and 7A. Taxis to Burnaby are also available.

By bus: Many buses routes Burnaby from Vancouver. #19 starts in downtown Vancouver and stops at the Metrotown Mall. #10 Hastings connects Burrard Street (downtown Vancouver) to Brentwood Mall along Hastings Streeth. If you wish to go to Burnaby Heights area, take Bus #135 SFU from downtown Vancouver. Buses are available from 5am to 1am.  Regular bus fare is $3.75, but it is discounted to $2.50 after 6:30 pm, on weekends, and during public holidays.

By train: The Skytrain rapid transit service has several stations in Burnaby. There are two transit lines that cross the city and link it with nearby municipalities. One, the Expo Line, routes central and south Burnaby. The Millenium Line, on the other hand, follows Loughweed Highway and services the northern part of Burnaby.  Skytrain lines have allowed faster links from and to Vancouver, New Westminster, and Surrey. From downtown Vancouver to central Burnaby (Metrotown), travel time is about 20 minutes.

Getting around Burnaby: Skytrain has 11 stops in Burnaby. If you’re on the Expo Line, you can get off at Patterson, Metrotown, Royal Oak, or Edmonds. The Millenium Line stops at Gilmore, Brentwood Town Centre, Holdom, Sperling, Lake City, Production Way, and Lougheed Town Centre. To get to a shopping mall, restaurant, or other destinations, there are plenty of buses in Burnaby. Walking and biking are other popular means of getting around the city.

One interesting idea is to make a list of “must see” spots. While you don’t want to get bogged down with too many tourist-like activities, chances are there are one or two things, at least, that you have to see. The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts was formally opened in 1995. It is spread across an area of thirty five thousand square feet. It is a multi-purpose multi-complex building located in Deer Park Lake, Burnaby.

Military and coast guards who venture in the sea for rescue mission or for defending the country of any intruders normally use these speedboats. Another category of ship is called the steamboat. This is used for passenger transportation for shorter distances. An engine that is powered by steam powers.

Nowadays these tree trunks are being replaced by fiber glass, an artificial substance made by man. There is another more sleek method of transportation by water, and that is the kayak. This is a slender version of the canoe. It has one or two holes where people can sit and maneuver it. This prevents water from entering the boat. Even if the boat capsizes, it will not sink.

Every ½ hour, 1-3:30pm on Sunday afternoons, the Burnaby Art Gallery offers a free interactive family activity that relates to the current gallery exhibits. All ages are welcome, not registration is required. This is a great way to experience new art forms, expose your child to the arts, and brighten up a dark winter afternoon.

The gallery offers programs to help open your younger children to the artistic world. March 21-25 there are three programs to keep your child busy during Spring Break. Split by ages 4-6, 6-7, and 8-11, your child will have the chance to explore drawing, painting, sculpture and more.  Give your young artist the chance to create a masterpiece for you at this fun workshop.

For the teen who is a budding artist there is an Artist Apprenticeship Project from Feb-May 2011, which includes 30 hours of work and allows the student to experience the gallery and art from many different perspectives.

Adult programs include lunch workshops, on Fridays 12-1pm. This allows you to fit an exploration of art into a busy workday without keeping you away from home in the evening. Space is limited so call ahead to reserve you spot.

Traditional style workshops, gear toward artists, coming up include topics such as Marketing and Social Media for Artists, Estate Planning, and Taxes for Artists.

The Japanese Canadian National Museum is open 11am -5pm, Tuesday through Saturday. The museum is a main part of the centre complex. The museum now offers online exhibits as well.

One upcoming event is the screening of the film “The Cats of Mirikitani” on dates in February and March. The film, which premiered at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festive, won the Audience Award. It is a poignant documentary about a WWII survivor, who faces his past after the events in New York City on 9/11.

Jan Ken Pon! (Rock Paper Scissors) Family Games Day is March 19, 2011 from 11-2. There will be heritage toys on display as well as many games you and your family can experience for yourselves. The games are intended for children ages 4 – 12 and must be with a parent or adult.

In addition to special events, the centre has regular weekly events. The weekly programs include cooking classes, Badminton, Dance, Tai Chi Quan, Shodo (Japanese Calligraphy), Yoga, Martial arts, and even a Bonsai class. The Ocean Quest Dive Centre contracts with several university programs to provide instruction, training and certification for their students, including Capilano University, Simon Fraser University, and BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology).

The most popular course at the centre is the PADI Open Water Course. In this course you learn the basics, begin in a pool and then advance to the ocean. The necessary equipment and train materials including books, and videos, are provided during the course. Due to personal fit, snorkel, mask, and fins, should be purchased by each individual student.

The centre is now offering a two-weekend certification program. If you are willing to give them two weekends, they will give you skills to explore under the oceans for a lifetime. Academic and pool work will be done the first weekend, and four ocean dives will round out the second weekend.

During the summer programs are available for children, ages 12-19, through the Simon Fraser University certification camps and the Discover Diving portion of the Aqua Camp. The child must have the ability to swim before beginning the program. 4 Ocean dives are included prior to certification.

The Whitecaps Foundation is part of achieving the goal to make the next generation the fittest generation in British Columbia. The target date for this goal is 2020. To achieve this goal and assist the youth of the area, the Foundation needs your help. One of example of what the Whitecap Foundation did during the 2010 year was to help the women’s team captain, Martina Franko, return to playing soccer competitively a few months are giving birth to a baby boy. The Chilliwack and Thompson River day trips are very popular. The Chilliwack run is a fabulous choice May through July since it is fed by Mount Baker snowmelt. This trip is 4-½ hours and covers 12 miles of river. The Chilliwack River can also be done in an afternoon.

The Pitch & Putts located in Kensington Park and Central Park are open to players ages eight and up and are open daily weather permitting. This is a less expensive, quicker option for those days when you are in a hurry, or are still learning. Senior (over 65) and Junior (under 18) rates are available. The Pitch & Putts use the following rules of play:
1-    Stay within one shot of the party in front of you
2-    Hit when ready and safe (no honour system)
3-    Continue putting until you hole out.
These rules are enforces to ensure the enjoyment of all players.

Burnaby Mountain and Riverway are the major golf venues in the area. Burnaby Mountain is a contemporary style course and Riverway offers a classic 18-hole course.

-  Barnet Marine Park has incredible views of Burrard Inlet as you walk along the shoreline. Remnants of Barnet’s rich pioneering history are throughout the park, since the park is located on what used to be a logging mill camp.

The carousel was built in the C.W. Parker Company factory in Kansas and was the one hundred and nineteenth carousel built in the factory; hence it is called Parker 119. After a history of traveling with the Lone Star Circus, returning to the factory, spending time possibly in California and Washington, it found a home at HAPPYLAND in Vancouver in 1936.

In 1989, the carousel was going to be sold piece by piece at auction. The “Friends of the Vancouver Carousel Society” was formed by concerned citizens, who wanted to keep and restore the beautiful old carousel to its former glory. The society raised the money to buy and restore the carousel after the museum agreed it could be placed on the grounds. The Burnaby Centennial project is to build a new permanent facility to house the carousel. The carousel receives regular restoration and maintenance to ensure it remains in perfect working order and is as beautifully detailed, as it was when it was first built.

The name carousel actually comes from the name Parker gave them, which was “Carry-Us-All’s” since he did not think “Merry-Go-Round” did justice to his creations.

The music that accompanies the carousel is from a restored 1925 146B Wurlitzer Military band organ. The authentic band organ creates the right music and atmosphere for riding the carousel.

The Heritage Village allows you to be transported to a 1920’s village. The combination of heritage and replica buildings enables visitors to explore at their own pace. Museum employees become people living and working in the town through their period costumes, demonstrations and information. Popular stops in the town are the blacksmith, the print shop, and the General Store. The site is wheelchair accessible and also offers a gift shop, ice cream parlour, with light meals and snacks, and picnic tables.

Spring Break Camp is for children ages 8-12 and runs March 21-25, 2011. Activities include baking spring themed cookies, nature walks, daily carousel rides, try blacksmithing, and play heritage period games.

The Summer Camps are for children ages 5-12, divided by age groups. Camps are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm unless otherwise stated. The cost is $150.00 for a five-day week, which does not include taxes. Camp topics include Back to Nature, Fun and Food, and Archaeological Explorations.

Walking Tours include the Haunted Deer Lake tour. The Haunted tour is only for people ages 16 and older. It is an evening tour that takes you through five reportedly haunted buildings, learn their history and what mysterious phenomenon is associated with each location.

Traditional Walking Tours are offered in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Educational programs are historically themed and are designed to complement the BC Social Studies curriculum. In the Three R’s program children grades 2-5 can spend a day like they are in school in the 1920’s, from topics of study, texts, “mini-lessons in reading, writing and ’rithmetic”, and recess games.
 
Blacksmithing classes at the forge are available for basic, forge welding, tool making, and women.  Sessions are $75.00 and run from 9am to 1pm.

Summer Sundays at Civic Square returns for a fourth summer of family friendly fun. 2011 Summer Sundays run July – August at Burnaby’s Civic Square. The events are different each week and are free. This is an inexpensive way to get out and do something different and keep the kids entertained on a summer afternoon.

27th Annual Burnaby Discovery Day Festival is on Sunday, July 10, 2011, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The festival is a celebration of the arts, culture and the Burnaby community. 23rd Annual Symphony In The Park will be Sunday, July 17, 2011, 7:30–9:30 pm features the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra set in Barnaby’s beautiful Deer Lake Park. This event is a free outdoor concert with popular favorites and lighter classic music. Sprawl out on a blanket with a picnic and let the scenery and music take you away. As a young boy, Gibson’s family moved around quite a bit, since his father worked for a building contractor that developed communities adjacent to World War 2 projects. William Gibson began writing not long after the birth of his first child. His early science fiction stories were met with some acclaim, but it was not until the publication of Neuromancer in 1984 that Gibson became famous. The book did not sell well at first, but became an underground hit, and it went on to win several science fiction awards that year. Gibson then published two other books set in the same era: Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. Since then, Gibson has published a book every year or so. Burnaby Homeless Connect brought various medical personnel to one place. Homeless people were able to get examinations for their teeth and eyes. They were able to get their blood pressure checked and visit with nurses and other health care professionals. In addition to the various health services offered, the event offered grooming services. People were able to get haircuts and makeovers. Free clothing and kits containing personal toiletries were also handed out.

Burnaby Homeless Connect did more than just provide health care and grooming care. Breakfast and lunch were served at no cost. Entertainment was provided, including games and drawings. This event was a way of helping the needy to get basic care and help. Without this event, many of Burnaby’s homeless would not have gotten the checkups and assistance they needed.

Homelessness may not be an overwhelming problem in Burnaby but it is all over the world. If more places followed Burnaby’s lead and held events like this one, more homeless people would get much needed assistance. Homelessness can happen without warning to anyone. The difficult economy that encompasses the world can wipe a person out in a short time. Colonel Richard Moody of the Victorian army in British Columbia, based on a recommendation, originally employed Robert Burnaby as a ‘Private Secretary’ and found him of great value in assisting him with the daily affairs of his office. During this brief period in Col. Moody’s office, Burnaby also actively helped plan the settlements in the towns of Queensborough, Hope and Yale. In 1859, Robert Burnaby became a full fledged businessman and also served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Victoria. In 1865 his businesses failed, but he continued in public service till his last years. Also during this time, in collaboration with Col. Moody, Burnaby continued to explore areas in New Westminster and in the Lower Mainland near the Burnaby Lake. The Municipality of the City of Burnaby was incorporated in 1892, named so in his honor by Col. Richard Moody. Since then, the pioneering efforts of Robert Burnaby have seen many streets, parks, a lake, a hill, a mountain range, an island in the the Queen Charlotte Islands and monuments in Burnaby being named after him. Robert Burnaby retired in 1869 due to ill health and returned to England in 1874. He finally died in 1878 in Woodthorpe, Leicestershire.
